Recently, API announced two changes to the Pipe and Steel industry that will become effective July 1, 2000. The first alters the formula we have all used for many years to calculate weight. Instead of using 10.68 as a multiplier, the new formula uses 10.69.

The second change announced by API revised Specification 5L. The Specification has been divided into two different categories, PSL-1 and PSL-2. This is perhaps one of the most significant changes in the Industry in recent years because it transforms our entire manufacturing, marketing, and end-use application. Although this was directed primarily at high-pressure gas transmission and volatile liquid applications, it is bound to have an impact on every aspect of our Industry.
